Waxing during your time of the month can be a sensitive topic, one that you may not feel comfortable talking to your aesthetician about. If you’ve been wondering how to go about an appointment while you’re on your period, Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio is here to break down the etiquette for you.

Waxing on your period is completely possible and is performed more often than you think. With over 7.87 million Americans receiving four or more wax treatments in just six months, a few of these people were bound to be on their period. Our cycles aren’t always on time and vacation might not be in sync with them anyways. Either way, life happens and at Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we understand waxing may need to happen during your time of the month.

The most important thing is not to be embarrassed. Menstruation is completely natural and nothing to be ashamed of, especially in front of an esthetician. With over 20 years of waxing experience, our owner and trained esthetician Ashlene French has seen it all. However, there are some steps you can take before to make it a more pleasant experience for both of you.

About 45 minutes prior to your appointment we suggest popping an ibuprofen tablet such as an Advil 400 and Extra Strength Tylenol. This will help to lessen any pain you may feel during the treatment. During menstruation the body enters an inflammatory state and becomes especially sensitive due to the increase in hormones. Taking a pain reliever ahead of time can alleviate any extra discomfort associated with your period.

Also, it is a good idea to take a quick shower immediately before your appointment and insert a fresh tampon upon your arrival. Wipes will also be provided for your use if you’re unable to shower beforehand. If you do not wear tampons, you’ll need to reschedule your waxing appointment for after your period. Tampon ensure the area remains clean throughout the appointment, making the process possible for your esthetician.

After your appointment is over, do keep in mind the area will be more tender than it normally would be. Be sure to wear loose clothing and allow the area to breathe as much as possible to avoid irritation. This is the only difference waxing on your period makes.

Thinking of going to an accessory store for your next piercing?

You know the ones we mean, where the cashier is also the one punching holes in your lobes. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we offer a safe, clean and reliable piercing experience you can trust.

Our owner and trained aesthetician Ashlene French offers a variety of piercing options for you to choose from: the earlobe, ear cartilage, and nose with a variety of earring options. All earrings are medical grade, pre-sterilized with Ethylene Oxide and made in the US. Unlike other stores that offer ear piercing services with low-quality jewelry, Ashlene provides superior studs to reduce the risk of inflammation and skin irritation. With options such as birthstones, diamonds, flowers, on either stainless steel, silver or gold posts, there’s something for everyone.

Any piercings of the ear are performed using the FDA approved Inverness 2000 piercing system: the safest, most advanced and sterile ear piercing device currently on the market. One of the notable safety features is a 100 percent earring encapsulation, which protects each client from possible cross between previous piercings. The Inverness 2000 also uses a patented system known as Safety Clutch™, which eliminates the chance of the backing getting squeezed too tightly to the back of the ear. The earrings used by Ashlene also have a longer shaft, giving the pierced area more room to breathe and allowing fresh air to get through and help clean the new hole.

The nose is pierced a bit differently, as it’s a more delicate area and central to the face. The area is first cleaned with Dr. Pierce Anti-Bacterial Body Piercing Cleanser, and then pierced using a specialized contraption that is designed for one time use. This means each nose is pierced with it’s own fresh and completely sterile device. As the nose is a sensitive area, and therefore more prone to infection, this extra measure is necessary to ensure fast and complete healing.

Each new piercing must be kept in for two full months to completely heal. The combination of Ashlene’s meticulous preparation process, high-grade jewelry, and advanced piercing devices will ensure your healing time to be a painless and comfortable process. Once the piercing is complete, Ashlene will go over an aftercare process with you to ensure the hole of the piercing does not become infected.

Looking to add another piercing to your collection? Choose a safe and professional treatment, courtesy of Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio. Contact us today to book your appointment.

Does your makeup routine consist mainly of brow products and mascara?

Not surprising considering 2016 saw a 42 percent rise of eyebrow products in Canada alone. Simplify your morning routine with eyelash and eyebrow tinting at Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio.

American women spend approximately 55 minutes on their appearance every single day, according to a recent survey. That’s about 335 hours—approximately two full weeks—a year spent on daily grooming. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we believe no one should have to sacrifice looking good and feeling confident in order to shed precious morning minutes, which is why we offer eyelash and eyebrow tinting. Our owner and trained esthetician, Ashlene French, can have your brows and lashes looking naturally perfect in 30 minutes or less.

If you’re a contact wearer, we recommend switching to your glasses on the day of your appointment, in case any ink gets onto your contact lens. If ink does travel into the eyes this is no problem, it will not cause any damage. You may feel a slight stinging sensation, which is completely normal. After the initial session your hairs may seem too dark, however they will lighten to your desired colour over just one or two washes.

If you’re planning on tinting your brows or lashes before a big event, we recommend making your appointment at least one week prior to the planned date. This ensures the pigment will have time to fade to your desired colour, and will look most natural.

The procedure itself is quick and comfortable, with no downtime. Each session in our light and airy studio starts with a discussion over tint colours and undertones. Ashlene will work with you to determine a shade that best suits your skin tone and hair colour. For those with blue and green eyes we usually recommend a blue-black tint for the eyes, and blackest black for every other eye colour.

After this consultation any makeup, dirt or oil surrounding the eye area will be removed with a fresh wipe, ensuring the skin is completely clean. Brow tinting takes about 15 minutes from start to finish, while lashes need a bit more time (between 15 to 20 minutes). If you’re looking to have both areas tinted Ashlene can still have you and your naturally re-defined eye area out the door in 30 minutes, with results that will last up to four weeks.

Waxing or laser hair removal off body and facial hair can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time.

With both methods of hair removal, well-known misconceptions can stray people to away from the more advanced methods and stick with shaving.

Hair Removal Myth #1: Waxing facial hair can cause premature wrinkles

The thought process behind this myth is when a wax strip is removed, the tugging motion can make skin more lax and cause skin to sag and cause premature wrinkles. This is not the case, not when waxing is performed properly. Skin should always be held as taut as possible before wax is spread onto the skin, ensuring little to no skin movement when the strip is then removed. Any experienced aesthetician, such as founder of Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, Ashlene French, knows how to properly protect your skin from pulling. Not only is this myth incorrect, but waxing can actually act as a beneficial exfoliate for your skin, removing dead cells and revealing the fresher skin underneath. Over time and continuous waxing, skin can actually look younger.

Hair Removal Myth #2: Waxing is always painfulno matter what

The level of pain experienced during a waxing appointment is highly dependent on two things: the quality of wax and expertise of the aesthetician. Although some pain is expected, as the hair follicle is being removed from the root, using a careful preparation process and high-grade wax ensures our clients are as comfortable as possible. The wax Ashlene uses for all her appointments is infused with essential oils that significantly reduce pain and/or irritation. To further reduce pain, plan your waxing as far from your special time of month as possible. When waxing closer to your period, the skin is more sensitive and can increase the skin significantly.

Hair Removal Myth #3: Laser hair removal is too expensive

Laser hair removal can greatly vary in price, depending on which technology is used; however, laser hair removal ends up being more cost efficient than shaving or waxing. The average woman spends approximately $10,207 on shaving products in her lifetime, and a whopping $23,000 on waxing. Although it may seem cost effective in the moment, having to consistently repurchase products or services adds up. Laser hair removal is the only hair removal option that offers permanent results. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we offer competitive pricing and treatments with the most efficient technology on the market to save you time and money.

Hair Removal Myth #4: Hair has to be long for waxing to work

Depending on the quality of wax used, hair does not have to be long to be pulled from the root. In fact, most professional waxing salons only need hair to be a quarter of an inch long (about the size of a grain of rice) to ensure a smooth, silky finish. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we recommend abstaining from shaving 10 to 14 days before your first appointment (depending on how fast your hair grows). Between waxings, we suggest leaving hair to grow to the minimum length of a quarter inch before making your next appointment which is generally every four to five weeks. As all hair follicles do not go through stages of the growth cycle at the same time, it may take time before all hair reaches this length. Waiting until the majority of the hair is long enough will ensure your appointment is most effective.

Hair Removal Myth #5: Laser hair removal doesn’t work on dark skin/those with lighter hair

Not all hair removal lasers are created equal. Although several systems currently on the market cannot accommodate those with darker skin tones or lighter hair, the Elos Plus by Syneron Candela does. Other laser hair removal technologies use heat power to target the melanin in hair (only effective for those with light skin and dark hair), whereas the Elos Plus Diode laser uses both bipolar radiofrequency and optical energy to remove hair without overheating the skin. For those with light hair or those darker skin tones, traditional laser hair removal technology can be ineffective and even painful, as the laser’s heat energy can be absorbed into the skin. The Elōs Plus Diode laser, used at Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, operates on a single wavelength, allowing laser energy to be extremely concentrated. Elōs Plus is able to target and destory each individual hair follicle, without affecting the surrounding skin. With this advanced technology, darker skin tones have minimal risk of pain or scarring and lighter hair colours have a higher level of clearance.

The pain of looking at outgrown hair is nothing compared to the pain of interfering with the growth of your hair by shaving in between waxes.

Immediate regret will kick in when you wake up the following morning with stubble. Do yourself (and your esthetician a favour)put the razor down!

It may be tempting to touch-up shaving between waxing appointments, but nothing that quick and easy comes without repercussions. Shaving in between waxes can result in ingrown hairs, an interference with your hair growth schedule, uneven results and even a change in your hair texture. According to SELF magazine, 84 percent of women wax their pubic hair and experience these issues when mixing shaving with waxing. There is one simple answer to this widespread problemjust don’t do it!

Many women make routine appointments at their waxing studio to remain on the same hair growth schedule for many months, and sometimes years. But sometimes life gets in the way, you’re invited to a pool party and reluctantly resort to shaving. Shaving interrupts your growth cycle and will impact your waxing results.

A change in your hair growth schedule can leave you with longer wait times in between your waxes, and may take your hair longer to grow back to the desired 4mm length (approximately the size of a grain of rice). If you decide that waiting isn’t an option for you, then you risk the chance that your wax will be uneven and your hair will continue to grow at different times leaving you with never completely clear skin.

Studies show that the next wax after your shave will also be more painful. After multiple waxing sessions (without touching the hair in between), the experience becomes less painful and the hair trained. Soley waxing will help eliminate ingrown hairs and the increased pain from uneven hair growth and texture.

First deciding to use waxing as your only method of hair removal can be a difficult decision, you have to be willing to let your hair grow for three to five weeks in between waxes, untouched. However compared to shaving (which can be a lot of upkeep), we are certain you’ll prefer the hair removal method. Waxing prompts hair to grow back more sparsely and softer, leaving you with less maintenance and discomfort.

Do yourself a favour, stick to one hair removal method. If you have questions about transitioning from shaving to waxing or waxing to laser hair removal, book your free consultation with Ashlene, founder of Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio.

Save time during your morning routine that would normally be spent filling in your brows.

Ashlene is an expert in the semi-permanent solution to their sparse or unshaped brows: microblading.

If you wish your morning routine were quicker, you’re definitely not the only one. In 2012, a survey conducted by YouGov found that 38 percent of women spend over a week’s worth of time each year “getting ready” in the mornings. Although this accounts for time such as  showering or doing your hair, arguably the most common time eater is applying makeup. Within the last few years eyebrow makeup has become more trendy than ever; eyebrow pencils, powders, pomades and gels have completely taken the beauty industry by storm. In 2016, Canada saw a 42 percent growth in eyebrow makeup sales. The trend of skinny, over tweezed, 90s brows are long gonefull, natural-looking brows are in.

Draw the perfect brows every morning just to live in fear of smudging and rain is no longer necessary. Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup treatment that provides the look of fuller, defined brows. The meticulous process uses a delicate microblading pen to individually draw on hair-like strokes on top of your existing brow hairs or on your predetermined brow line.

With vast colour options, Ashlene can help choose the perfect pigment for your natural look. Similar to tattooing, the pigment lies under the superficial dermal layer of skin but it does not provide permanent results. The life of your microblading results depends on your skin how well it can retain the pigment; however results last approximately 12 to 18 months.

After an initial treatment, Ashlene will follow-up for a second touch up treatment, as pigment tends to fade significantly within the first month. To keep your brow game strong, it is recommended you come back for a touch up annually.

Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio’s founder and licensed esthetician, Ashlene French, strives to ensure each client is informed and comfortable throughout their entire microblading procedure (including before and after care). Ashlene suggests that the week prior to your appointment you avoid any fussing with your brows, including tweezing, threading, waxing. Eyebrow tinting can be performed up to four days prior to your microblading appointment. Also for at least two weeks prior to your treatments (initial and touch up), do not have any professional aesthetic treatments performed, such as chemical treatments, peels, facials or lasers.

After the skin surrounding your brows has been cleaned, a topical anesthesia will be applied to numb the area and ensure muscles are relaxed throughout the procedure. Brows must be kept as dry for the first seven to ten days post treatment. No swimming, sweating or submersion into water. Your hair and face can still be washed but with precaution. Also try your best to limit direct sun exposure.

With more than 20 years of experience behind her, Ashlene can help simplify your morning routine with microblading. Book your free consultation now.

What to expect when first exposing your who-ha to a complete stranger during your first waxing appointment—from the moment you unzip to the moment you leave.

Even though the summer is ending, for most women waxing appointments continue all year. If you’ve never waxed before, the hesitation or feelings of anxiety are completely normal. Exposing your who-ha to a complete stranger can be uncomfortable, to say the least, and often times the most nerve-wracking part of the experience is not knowing what to expect. Whether you’re going for your first wax at Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio or have been waxing with the same esthetician for years, we believe it is essential that all women know the proper etiquette for waxing appointments.

When you arrive at Ashlene’s Wax and Laser Studio you will be greeted and lead to into the waxing room where you’ll have a quick consultation. This is a great opportunity for some small talk and to ask any questions before any unzipping. If it’s your first waxing appointment, let your esthetician know any worries you may have. If you are a baby with pain, don’t be afraid to mention it!

Once you are comfortable and the esthetician knows which style of wax you would like, she will give you privacy while you remove your pants and underwear, lie down on the waxing bed, and cover yourself with a towel. Although this might seem like a necessary step (as your esthetician is about to see you who-ha in more detail than even you). This is a standard act of etiquette you should always expect from any wax studio. You should also always expect clean disposable sheet will be laid on the salon bed for your appointment. As well as a fresh towel(s) provided for sanitary reasons.

Estheticians are required to wear gloves throughout the entirety of your waxing appointment. From applying and removing the strips to calming your skin with lotion or baby powder. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, our estheticians will start by removing your towel. Then applying essential oils to help ease the pain and to sooth the hair follicles before pulling. Once the desired area has been soothed with oil, the waxing will begin.

There are many types of waxing styles down there. From bikini waxes to Brazilians, every woman has a preference of the final look. You can discuss exactly what you want during your consultation at the beginning of your appointment.

Warm wax is applied to the skin using a wooden spatula—this should only ever touch your skin once before being disposed, as a second use will contaminate the hot wax. This is essential to take mind of as this wax pot is used on many clients and germs can easily spread.

Next, a waxing strip (which has a texture in between cloth and paper) is placed over the warm wax on your skin for approximately 20 seconds as it dries. Once the wax has dried, the esthetician will hold the surrounding skin taut and in one motion, will pull the strip in the opposite direction as your hair grows. This process repeats itself until the entirety of the area is clear of unwanted hair. Depending on the esthetician, she may ask you to move into uncomfortable and sometimes awkward positions in order to get the hard to reach areas (you’ll thank her later!). For example, during a Brazilian wax, you’ll often be asked to turn to your side as they get your backside. You may also be asked to help hold skin taut in more sensitive areas.

Just how painful is a wax? Different clients have multiple pain thresholds, and not to mention different thickness and types of hair. Depending on the person and the area that is being waxed, the pain will differ. For women, the wax pain is brief and doesn’t succeed the appointment.

After the esthetician is finished with the strips, they may go back through their work and tweeze any hairs that were missed.  A soothing cream (of often baby powder) will be applied to waxed area of skin. The esthetician will leave the room for a couple minutes so you can double check her work. If there are any missed sections, let your esthetician know. So it can be fixed before you are again, given privacy to dress.

You may notice that the area of skin remains slightly red for approximately two to three hours. If redness succeeds the end of the day, please let your esthetician know. Upon leaving, book your next appointment for approximately three weeks post wax studio visit.

Like everything in life, it gets more comfortable with time. Once you’ve found the esthetician that gives you the results and comfort you need, don’t let her go! For many women, we spend years with the same waxing studio. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, Ashlene believes whether it’s first appointment or 100th, etiquette should never be compromised.

If the pain of a wax doesn’t phase you, then what’s stopping you from laser hair removal?

At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we may been known for the best Brazilian wax in Vancouver, but our advanced  laser hair removal technology makes the option for permanent hair removal more than desirable.

There are many differences between waxing and getting laser hair removal, but one of the biggest similarities is the level of pain inflicted during both treatments. Laser hair removal is the next level up from waxing, so for those of you who are fed up with the countless waxing appointments every month, this is for you!

When you get waxed, the hair follicle is being pulled out of the skin at the root so that the hair growth is stumped for a limited amount of time. Waxing is not necessary for up to four to five weeks. Although retardation of the hair can be achieved with waxing, it does so slowly and not possible with everyone. Unlike waxing, laser hair removal destroys the hair follicle through multiple series of treatments and eventually stops the hair growth all together.

Your first laser hair removal appointment is similar to the pain level of waxing. Everyone has a different pain threshold and the level of tolerance may differ from client to client. Would you rather come every month for the rest of your life enduring the sting of waxing or eight treatments and be done with it? Laser hair removal rectify the issue permanently so hair removal discomfort won’t be necessary the rest of your life.

A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area to ensure the most comfortable experience during your laser procedure. The Elos Plus hair removal laser, is the most advanced laser hair removal technology, and treatments are significantly less than those of traditional lasers. Each  zap lasts only a split second and you may experience a slight warming sensation. The heat sensation won’t occur with every zap but may be experienced throughout. Depending on the area, treatment times range from 15 minutes (for underarm) up to an hour (for a full leg). Depending on your pain tolerance, Ashlene will give you breaks throughout.

The best way to describe the feeling of the laser is a rubber band snapping against the skin for a split second. Depending on the area, the pain will differarms and legs will be less painful than sensitive areas like your face or who-ha. It all comes down to the thickness of the skin (the thicker the skin, the less painful it is).

The Elos Plus laser leaves all skin surrounding the hair follicle unharmed and minimizes any risk associated with laser hair removal. A cooling application is built into the Elos Plus to maximize comfort of the treatment and protect the top layer of the skin. To cool the skin after the treatment, Ashlene will apply an aloe soothing gel to the treated area. The discomfort or slight warmth will only last for the moments during the treatment and does not succeed your appointment.

In conclusion, you will have some discomfort but it really is no different than waxing. The difference is with laser hair removal, there is a light at the end of tunnelthe treatments end with permanently hair free skin. Laser hair removal didn’t become the number one aesthetic treatment in North America by being too much to handle. You can do it (even if you consider yourself baby with pain)!

If you are still worried, contact Ashlene for a test patch during your free consultation so you know what to expect. The slight pain of laser hair reduction makes up for the countless pain of bumps, ingrown hairs, and rashes that seem to pop up when shaving and waxing. So put down the razors and forget waxing, talk to Ashlene about laser hair removal today.

Ashlene Explains the History of the Brazilian

If you heard the term Brazilian 30 years ago you it was most likely used to describe a person native to Brazilnot a term to describe a bikini wax. Although being hair free down there has been recording in history as late as the ancient Egyptians, it was only in 1982 when the waxing style hit the spas of North America. Ashlene of Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio has perfected the Brazilian earning her studio the title of Vancouver’s best Brazilian.

Although it may seem like a modern grooming practice, removing pubic hair is not exactly a new concept. The earliest traceable origins of hair removal stem from the ancient Egyptians. Who would use homemade tweezers, pumice stones and beeswax to remove all the hair from their body (including down there). Skipping forward 3,000 years to the Roman Empire. It was once considered uncivilized to have any public hair. Successful men and women would create their own razors out of flints, use tweezers, creams and stones to remove unwanted hair. If you notice, many paintings during this time depicted women as fairly hairless. It wasn’t until the late 1800s when American entrepreneur King C. Gillette patented the first safe, disposable razor for men, that hair removal started to become more customary.

Over the modern decades, new forms of hair removal came to the market. However, hair removal from a woman’s nether region was rarely a part of the conversation. That is until the late 1980s. When the phenomenon known as the Brazilian wax came to North America. In 1982 seven sisters from Brazil immigrated to America leaving successful salons in their hometown of Vitoria, Brazil. Despite the language barrier, the sisters gained experience in other salons. Then slowly built a clientele of celebrities and magazine editors. In 1987, all seven sisters with names starting with a J opened the now infamous J. Sisters Salon in downtown Manhattan. The business did quite well in its early years! It really started to gain attention once they introduced the “extreme bikini wax”.

They had been creating a bare canvas out of women’s nether regions for years in Brazil, as there it is custom to wear tiny bikinis, but nothing like it had yet been introduced to mainstream America. Due to their clientele of well connected celebrities and magazine editors, it didn’t take long for this fad to spread across the country and infiltrating into almost every local salon and spa. As the pioneers of this new era of self grooming, the wax is named the Brazilian to commemorate them.

The Brazilian has become more popular over the years and is now considered the norm of hair removal. A 2016 survey conducted by JAMA Dermatology, found 62 percent of American women remove all of their pubic hair consistently. Within the last decade or so, laser hair removal has become more common than ever.

In fact, it is now the number one most popular aesthetic treatment among all non-invasive procedures in North America. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we don’t find this fact that shocking. Laser hair removal is the only way to attain permanently smooth, hair-free skin, and it’s now more accessible and affordable than ever.

If you’ve ever felt laser hair removal was too time-consuming, or expensive, we’re here to assure you times have changed. It is actually more cost-effective and time-saving to have laser hair removal than traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving and waxing. If you have been removing unwanted hair for any period of time, chances are you’ve picked up a razor to do so. It has been estimated that the average woman will shave 7,718 times in her lifetime. Since shaving takes an approximately 10.9 minutes each time and assuming the average woman shaves three times a week, this whole process adds up to 58.4 days of shaving. And the cost? After calculating the average cost of shaving products like disposable razors and shaving cream, the grand total comes to $10,207 spent shaving in the average woman’s lifetime.

Switching to laser hair removal will not only free up a minimum of two months out of your life, it will save your hard earned cash. Ashlene offers competitive prices for all of our laser hair removal services. Plus once finished your laser treatments, you’ll never have to shave, wax or pluck againor buy the products that come along with it! You can have forever smooth legs for as low as $180 for the lower leg. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, every area of your unwanted hair can be permanently removed and at a fraction of the cost.

Laser hair removal technology has significantly improved over the decades. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio, we use Syneron Candela’s revolutionary elōs Plus laser hair removal system. With the Motif laser, the advanced technology effectively targets and destroys hair follicles without impacting the surrounding skin. With the combined elōs technology of bipolar radiofrequency (RF) and optical energy, elōs Plus is able to treat larger areas of skin in a shorter amount of time (compared to competitive laser systems). Depending on the size of the area, treatments are usually complete after six to eight sessions, spaced approximately four to six weeks apart (legs being spaced eight to ten weeks apart). After each session, hair will grow back finer and more slowly, until hair is completely removed.

Unlike shaving, laser hair removal does not leave your skin with uncomfortable bumps, nicks, or ingrown hairs. At Ashlene’s Laser and Wax Studio you will be under the care of owner and licensed esthetician Ashlene French . With 20 years of experience, Ashlene ensures you are informed and completely comfortable throughout your entire session. Although the elōs Plus system is relatively painless, you may feel a slight tingling or warm sensation. If any redness or skin irritation occurs, it will calm within 24 hours post-treatment so you are only left with smooth, silky skin that will last.
